(12th February, Reporter Goh Bo-rong, Military News Agency, Kaohsiung) Chung Cheng Armed Forces Preparatory School has established “English Language Learning Simulation Classroom” to enhance the English language proficiency of the youths in National Armed Forces. The classroom effectively increases the students’ ability to speak and listen in English through courses, themed activities, interesting Q&A games, and other methods. The classroom allows the students to interact and communicate naturally with native English-speaking teachers, and increased the students’ motivation to study, hence achieving excellent teaching effectiveness.

The 16 projectors installed in the English Language Learning Simulation Classroom create a surrounding effect by casting projections onto the walls, which generates the illusion of being in the actual environment. There are 32 types of simulated environment, such as restaurant, airport and cultural destinations. Apart from the day-to-day setting selections, other simulations, such as the outer space, military culture, special festivals and etc., can be added. The simulated environments enable the students to immerse in the environment of the language while learning and pique their interest to learn.

“The simulated classroom makes me feel confident in my ability to speak in English, and it enables me to have a smoother communication.” says the student, He Wei-jun. He believes the classroom to be a special learning method as it used projectors to display the simulated environments, such as a restaurant in a foreign country, stations, and etc. on the screen. He expresses that during the process, the teacher could select the conversation mode, whereby characters appear on the screen and speak; or, the teacher could let the students interact with the simulated environment, which allows everyone to engage in the learning, e.g. in the restaurant mode, a student may act as the waiter and create a conversation for two. He believes the classroom to be extremely helpful in improving English and it creates more variation in the practical application of the language, and he will be able to utilize the knowledge learned from this program when he is traveling overseas.

“A unique teaching method allows for the enhancement of linguistic abilities.” says the student, Qian Guan-wei. He expresses that being in the English Language Learning Simulation Classroom makes him feel as if he was learning in a foreign country, and the student-teacher interactions are more interesting. He states that unlike the traditional method of learning English through rote learning, which has very limited effect for the beginner English language learners, the English Language Learning Simulation Classroom allows the students to look for the correct answer using the projected images, and allows the students to learn in a happy environment. He believes that this method helps the students to easily recall the vocabulary learned and spares them the worry of being forgetful.

“This is an impressive facility. I have never seen any system like this.” Said the native English-speaking teacher, Tuohy Nathaniel Arthur. He perceives the ability to fully immerse oneself and learn in a different simulated environment to be an interesting fact. He states that classrooms only used projectors to teach in the past; however, surrounded by the simulations, the students are able to experience being in the actual environment in the simulated classroom. He believes the program to be an excellent and efficient method of learning.

Native English-speaking teacher, Tuohy Nathaniel Arthur, expresses that he encourages the students to learn English and think about how they should utilize the foreign language when they assume the role of officers in the future. He believes that this program is helpful for the students’ career in the military, as they have the opportunities to be trained overseas and cooperate with foreign military personnel.
